Most mould doesn't need a lab to identify it. Testing earns its cost in a few specific situations, and we'll tell you honestly whether yours is one of them.
Air samples compare spore levels inside with the air outside at the same time, which shows whether the house has a problem the outdoors doesn't. Surface swabs or tape lifts identify what's growing on a particular patch. Neither finds the source of the moisture, which is the part that needs fixing, so we pair any test with moisture readings.
Results come back from the lab in a few days. They are a snapshot, and levels change with the weather, heating and how recently the room was disturbed.
If mould is visible, the cause is obvious (a leak you've just had, or condensation on a cold north wall) and nobody is unwell, spend the money on fixing the damp instead. We'll say so. Plenty of older Hull terraces get condensation mould every winter, and a test won't tell you anything about that a look and a hygrometer can't.
After a flood, especially one involving sewer water, hidden mould under floors and inside walls is common. That's where testing before you move back in can be worth it, alongside a proper drying record. For the removal itself, see mould remediation.
If the mould followed a leak, our water damage cost estimator prices the drying and repairs as well as the mould removal.
Mould starts growing within 24 to 48 hours of a leak. The sooner drying starts, the less damage and the lower the cost.
Call 01482 736003Only if you can't see the source, someone's health is affected, you need evidence for a dispute, or you want to confirm a cleaned room is safe. Visible mould with an obvious cause doesn't need a lab.
Usually a few working days from the lab. We explain the results in plain terms and what, if anything, needs doing.
No. A test shows what's growing and how much. Moisture readings and a look at the building find the source, so we do both.
It helps. Lab results alongside dated photos and moisture readings are much harder to dismiss than a description of the problem.
