Hull City Council puts more than 90% of the city below high tide level, and every drop of rain that falls on it has to be pumped out. Most of the time that works. On 25 June 2007 it didn't, and 8,657 houses on more than 600 streets flooded, the worst of them in west Hull, Orchard Park and Bransholme. In December 2013 the Humber reached a record 5.8m at the Hull barrier and flooded homes around Walker Street and the city centre. The council now describes Hull as the UK city most exposed to flooding after London.
